Motor Show: New York Preview: Hyundai reveals its cut-price 5-Series rival

Image Hosted by ImageCows ImagesHyundai has given the full low-down on its Concept Genesis large saloon, previewing an as-yet un-named model which goes on sale in North America next year as a high-spec, low-price alternative to the BMW 5-Series.

Concept Genesis is a rear-wheel-drive saloon around the size of a 5-Series, but lighter than both the BMW and the Mercedes E-Class. The 'premium sports saloon' showcases Hyundai's all-new Tau V8 - a 300bhp-plus 4.6 - and a six-speed automatic gearbox. It's capable of 0-60mph acceleration in less than six seconds. Hyundai says the engine is 'built with flexibility for the future' - which could mean ethanol or other biofuel compatibility as well as the 'larger displacement, forced induction options and other technology enhancements' it promises.

Hyundai promises refined handling characteristics, aided by multi-link suspension front and rear. It will have a limited-slip differential, stability control, traction control, active headrests, eight airbags - and a competitive price. No word yet on European availability, but it's no doubt under consideration if the car meets with a good reception in New York next month.

Assets
Looks terrific, mixes Italian flair with real quality, has sporty handling but a decent ride, sounds crisp and keen, is roomy and well equipped. Sportwagon estate is much roomier than its 156 equivalent.

Drawbacks
Steering too light in some versions, awkward handbrake, mediocre fuel economy, portwagon not that versatile.

Verdict
Alfa's latest attempt to take on BMW's 3-Series is a worthy rival with substance as well as character. The V6 Q4 is especially good.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition (2007-)

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

What must it be like to have so much wealth that you could buy any car you wanted? It wouldn't matter to you that a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren costs twice as much as even a mega-expensive toy like a Ferrari 599, because you'd probably have both. And if Mercedes offered an even faster, even more expensive version of the SLR, then you'd probably have to have that as well.

Mercedes has now done exactly that. If you think a 208mph maximum speed and a 3.8-second 0-62mph time are really a bit feeble in the modern world, and that too many of the carbonfibre uber-GTs have fallen into footballers' hands, then clearly you need the new, enhanced version. Just 150 examples of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition will be built, with 650bhp instead of the usual 626, a torque rise to 605lb-ft from 575, and an extra 1mph on the top speed. Oh yes, 62mph now arrives 3.6 seconds after blast-off, too.

So, what's this '722' business? The first Mercedes SLR was a rather famous sports racing car, best known for being the mount of Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson when they won the 1955 Mille Miglia at an average speed never to be beaten. That car wore race number 722, denoting the 7.22am start time. So with the current regular SLR named after that racing original, why not name the ultimate version after the, well, ultimate version?

One thing you'd think the SLR did not need was more power, but as it's achieved simply enough by revisions to the electronic mapping, it seems churlish not to add a little extra explosiveness. Owners have been calling for more sportiness, it seems, and the power is just part of it. The ride height has been lowered by a centimetre and the steel-bodied Bilstein dampers have been replaced by aluminium-bodied Konis which are 15% stiffer on bump (but unchanged on rebound). These lighter dampers reduce unsprung weight, as do the more skeletal, black-spoked wheels. Together they more than compensate for the bigger diameter of the carbon-ceramic front brake discs. There's a lighter oil tank for the dry-sump lubrication system, too, all contributing to an overall 44kg weight loss.

Mitsubishi sees the light with Eclipse

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

The performance GT market could soon have a new player writes Richard Yarrow. Mitsubishi looks set to bring the Eclipse four-seater to the UK next summer.

The company's UK division is still haggling over costs - specifically sourcing left-hand drive cars from America and converting them to right-hand drive when they come off the boat. But 4Car has learned an Eclipse was unveiled to dealers during a dealer conference in early December. And a spokeswoman admitted: 'It's not 100% confirmed yet, but it's looking positive.'
The Eclipse is a popular sports car in US, where it has been on sale since 1989. Early versions were rebadged and sold as the Plymouth Laser. The current model is the fourth and was launched last year after a debut at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show. The Eclipse has never been officially sold in the UK, but some have been brought in by private importers.

It's slightly longer than Nissan's two-seater 350Z and available with two petrol engines, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder unit offering 162bhp and a 3.8-litre V6 delivering 263bhp. Transmission options are a six-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed automatic, and it's available as a coupe or a convertible, badged as the Spyder.

So many model options leaves Mitsubishi UK with a dilemma, but insiders say the line-up will probably consist of an automatic flagship and an entry-level manual. Both body styles will be sold. The plan is to launch in June or July with prices starting at around £23,000, rising to over £30,000 for a top-spec car.

'It's a great vehicle, looks sexy and drives well,' added the spokeswoman. 'And it's not like Mitsubishi doesn't know anything about performance cars. With Evo we have a deserved reputation in this sector so we don't believe selling the Eclipse is going to be a problem.'

BMW 3-Series

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

Improving on the excellent fourth-generation 3-Series was, arguably, the biggest challenge facing the recently launched fifth generation 3. Bigger in every direction than the car it replaces, the 3-Series represents a mature and gently progressive evolution of a winning formula. The car remains the dynamic leader in the class, with a hugely competent and sporting chassis.

The quality of build and materials remains sky high, guaranteeing strong residuals and an excellent long-term ownership proposition.

Mazda 5

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

The hugely versatile Mazda 5 is unique among MPVs with its 6+1 seating arrangement. Six full-size seats are fitted in a 2+2+2 arrangement, with an additional fold-down seat between the middle pair.

It shares its platform with the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus as well as the Focus C-MAX Compact MPV and is surprisingly good to drive. Two petrol engines and a couple of strong diesels are available. Decent spec levels and strong pricing make the 5 an excellent choice for those looking for a really practical family car that's not dull-as-ditchwater to drive.

Vauxhall Zafira

By cleverly evolving what was already a brilliant package, Vauxhall has created a new class leader. There is more space on offer in the Zafira, too, which means tall adults can comfortably occupy all three rows of seats. And the brilliant Flex 7 seating system, which allows the third row of seats to fold flat into the floor in seconds, has been carried over unchanged.

Vauxhall has also addressed one of our more serious concerns about Zafira - its EuroNCAP crash rating has gone from a poor three stars to the maximum five stars. It's child protection rating has also been hugely improved and is now a match for the best in class. The fact that perceived quality and the driving experience have been improved is just a bonus.

The mad VXR version is a hoot.

AC Ace

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

There are doubts that this reborn Smart Roadster will come to fruition, but the Project Kimber website is still promising a 2007 launch for both coupes and drop-tops. The Kimber consortium has secured the licence to the historic AC badge plus all the original tooling from Smart's Hambach factory. Revisions to the original include the latest Mitsubishi-supplied three-cylinder engine and a proper manual gearbox.

Toyota Yaris

The latest Yaris is more of an evolution than a revolution, but if it ain't broke… Three engines are on offer, with the diesel the star of the show. All are supremely easy to drive with the manual gearbox (we'd recommend avoiding the clutchless sequential versions). The Yaris can also cope with the open motorway as well as it can urban runabouts.

An entirely sensible choice that should prove reliable and a pleasure to own and run over the longer term.

Peugeot 207

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

With the Clio losing any element of fun or style with its latest iteration, we have Peugeot to thank for bringing some much-needed Gallic flair to the humdrum supermini sector with the 207. Thankfully, it also drives as well as it looks, with the GT and GTi versions delivering the most fun.

An excellent result in the EuroNCAP crash tests shows that you don’t have to sacrifice fun to be safe.

Vauxhall Corsa

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

Forget the middle-of-the-road Corsa, the new supermini from Vauxhall couldn't be further removed from the old model. With sharp styling and some cracking engines – the 1.3-litre diesels are very good indeed – the Corsa is now a credible contender. Even though it'll be as common as muck, at least this time around all those learner drivers and boy racers will be driving something pretty decent - the VXR version is an absolute screamer.

It's great value for money too, so there's no reason for you not getting onboard.

Volkswagen Fox

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

The Fox is Volkswagen's no-frills entry-level car, designed for those to whom a car is more of a tool rather than a life-long dream. But don't let that put you off as it has excellent interior space and practicality, all wrapped up in a no-nonsense exterior. Two engines are offered in two trim levels. Keenly priced and not too shabby to drive either. Well worth a look.

Fiat Panda

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

Awarded European Car of the Year in 2004, the Panda was indeed a worthy winner. Despite compact dimensions, it has a roomy, versatile interior, and unlike so many budget cars, it is fun to drive with lively engines and responsive handling. And it is affordable to buy, good value for money and cheap to run, with low insurance groupings and economical engines.

Reassuringly solid, the Panda is not overly complex and its components are well-proven. Very user-friendly and an ideal urban runabout that can hold its own on the motorway or even, in the 4x4 version, off road altogether. There's even a hot hatch version for those looking for some cheap thrills.

Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo

Image Hosted by ImageCows Images

These three models are the product of a joint venture between Toyota, Peugeot and Citroen and are near identical save for bumpers and lights. All have bundles of character even though they've obviously been built down to a price.

Engineered and built to Toyota standards, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of fit and finish. A four-star Euro NCAP crash test result is the best in the class, and all three offer an excellent ride-and-handling compromise as well as reasonable performance from the three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine.

Three and five-door variants are available and both C1 and Aygo can be specified with a diesel engine. Taking account of standard and optional equipment variations, all three are similar value, so its really down to which dealer you prefer.
